A xilogravura é uma técnica de impressão a frio em que uma imagem é entalhada em uma superfície lida, em especial placas de madeira. Este tipo de gravura é geralmente associada a literatura de Cordel, um tipo de prosa ou narrativa poética, típica do da cultura popular do nordeste do Brasil. Os artistas da xilogravura produzem ilustrações de características naifs e de cores fortes para acompanhar as histórias contadas em livretos, seno essa forma de expressão gráfica um patrimônio importante da cultura iconográfica Brasileira. A realização de uma xilogravura envolve 5 etapas: 1. Escolha da madeira para gravar a imagem; 2. Entalhe da imagem na superfície da madeira; 3. Aplicação da tinta na superfície preservando a parte entalhada; 4. Impressão sobre papel; 5. Secagem e acabamento.
Seu mais importante expoente é J. Borges, 88 anos, 56 deles dedicados à literatura de Cordel a xilogravura. Artista popular autodidata, poeta, xilogravador, patrimônio vivo de Pernambuco e pai de 18 filhos. Aos dez anos de idade vendia na feira da cidade colheres de pau que ele mesmo produzia. Encontrou seu caminho aos 21 anos e através dele se tornou artista consagrado, com obra premiada e admirado em todo o mundo. Ao longo de mais de 50 anos de uma fecunda trajetória artística, J.Borges produziu 300 folhetos de cordel e um número incalculável de xilogravuras já expostas em diversos museus.
Comparado a Pablo Picasso em reportagem do jornal New York Times (2006), que também o considerou “gênio da cultura popular”. A importância do seu trabalho foi reconhecida através de importantes prêmios. J.Borges tem especial atenção às oficinas que realiza para jovens e crianças em seu Memorial, que também abriga o Museu da Xilogravura, ateliê e loja. Woodcuts produce illustrations with naive characteristics and strong colors to accompany the stories told in the pamphlets, since this form of graphic expression is an important heritage of Brazilian iconographic culture. Making a wood engraving involves 5 steps: 1. Choose the wood to engrave the image; 2. Carve the image on the wood surface; 3. Apply the paint to the surface, preserving the carved part; 4. Printing on paper; 5. Drying and finishing.

Self-taught popular artist, poet, wood engraver, living heritage of Pernambuco and father of 18 children. When he was ten years old, he sold wooden spoons that he made himself at the city fair. He found his way at the age of 21 and through it he became a recognized artist, with award-winning work and admired all over the world. Throughout more than 50 years of fruitful artistic career, J. Borges produced 300 cordel pamphlets and an incalculable number of woodcuts already exhibited in various museums.
Compared to Pablo Picasso in a New York Times report (2006), which also considered him a “genius of popular culture.” The importance of his work was recognized through important awards. J.Borges pays special attention to the workshops he gives to young people and children in his Memorial, which also houses the Woodcut Museum, workshop and store.
