O Vale do Jequitinhonha é uma área na região norte do Estado de Minas Gerais que abarca mais de 50 municípios, sendo um dos maiores produtores e exportadores do artesanato brasileiro. Sua população artesã vive, em sua maioria, em pequenos povoados carentes de recursos elementares, que por uma questão se sobrevivência encontraram na arte popular e no artesanato um meio de vida e de trabalho.
A partir do anos setenta o artesanato a cerâmica figurativa passou a ser reconhecida como uma das maiores expressões da arte popular da região do Estado de Minas Gerais. As características desta cerâmica de baixa temperatura são as tonalidades claras do barro encontrado na região e os temas são as cenas do cotidianos. Em cada família uma ceramista se destaca e em cada uma delas um traço característico nas feições de seus personagens de barro as distingue.
Uma das mais atuantes e proeminentes ceramistas da atualidade é Maria Jose Gomes da Silvam conhecida pelo apelido de Zezinha. Aprendeu a trabalhar com o barro vendo seus pais, Maria Gomes Ferreira e Manuel Gomes da Silva, que eram ceramistas. Sua mãe vive até hoje na zona rural de Campo Alegre, onde segue trabalhando com cerâmica juntamente com sua filha Maria de Fátima; na família, Zezinha foi a que mais projeção teve. Ela é casada com Ulisses Gomes dos Santos, com o qual teve duas filhas, Cláudia e Aline, já iniciadas na arte do barro e prováveis sucessoras da arte de sua mãe. A família mora atualmente na zona rural de Coqueiro Campo, onde trabalha diariamente na modelagem do barro.

The Jequitinhonha Valley is an area in the northern region of the State of Minas Gerais that covers more than 50 municipalities, being one of the largest producers and exporters of Brazilian crafts. Its artisan population lives, for the most part, in small towns lacking basic resources, who to survive found a way of life and work in popular art and crafts.
Starting in the seventies, figurative ceramics began to be recognized as one of the greatest expressions of popular art in the region of the State of Minas Gerais. The characteristics of this low-temperature ceramic are the light tones of the clay found in the region and the themes are everyday scenes. In each family a potter stands out and in each of them a characteristic feature distinguishes them in the features of their clay characters.
One of the most active and prominent ceramists today is María José Gomes da Silvam, known by the nickname Zezinha. He learned to work with clay by observing his parents, Maria Gomes Ferreira and Manuel Gomes da Silva, who were potters. His mother still lives in the rural area of Campo Alegre, where she continues working ceramics with her daughter María de Fátima; In the family, Zezinha was the one who had the most projection. She is married to Ulisses Gomes dos Santos, with whom she had two daughters, Cláudia and Aline, already introduced to the art of clay and probable successors to her mother’s art. Currently the family lives in the rural area of Coqueiro Campo, where they work daily modeling clay.
