Description
Saddlery is an occupation of colonial origin that has not lost its validity in the national market partly due to the socio-economic characteristics of the country linked particularly to field work, agriculture and livestock.
During the colonial era, demand was linked to mining exploitation, which required constant production of leather bags such as saddlebags, saddles, satchels, tackle, girdles or girths for animals, boots, muzzles, harnesses and straps in general. This type of artisanal activity has proliferated in livestock and mining areas, diversifying and transforming according to market demand. While in the different livestock areas they have maintained the traditional offer, among which the production of horse saddles stands out, the saddlery in the community of Valle de Ángeles has diversified by serving a different offer in the design market of bags, shoes, sandals, furniture and belts.
The skin used for its manufacture is cow and goat and the curing and tanning processes of the skin depend on the technological process in the different areas of the country. In many places in Honduras, dyeing continues with natural dyes extracted from the bark of Nacascolo, Mangle, Brazil and Nance trees. The types of leather used depend on the type of piece to be manufactured, for example, belly leather is the finest and is used to make higher quality products such as purses and wallets.
