En Venezuela el auge del Arte Popular comenzó a manifestarse a mediados del siglo XX con auspicio del Ministerio de Cultura y Fundaciones privadas.
Había pocos artistas conocidos. Seres desprovistos de identidad que casi al final de su vida recibieron reconocimiento por parte de la elite cultural. Entre los más famosos estaban Bárbaro Rivas nacido en Petare en 1893. El Museo y la Bienal de Arte Popular llevan su nombre; Salvador Valero a quien la Universidad de los Andes honró, al crear el Museo de Arte Popular de Trujillo y la Bienal con su nombre. Rafaela Baroni y Antonio José Fernández también trujillanos, obtuvieron reconocimientos como destacados artistas.
Feliciano Carvallo oriundo de Naiguatá, nacido en 1920 se dio a conocer en 1947. Con él, se inicia un periodo importante para la pintura ingenua que viene a manifestarse con vigor a partir de los años 80.
El máximo artista Popular Juan Félix Sánchez del Estado Mérida, tejedor de cobijas de lana, tallista, arquitecto, ceramista y ermitaño. Fue descubierto a la edad de 80 años en el paramo del Tisure. El Ministerio le Otorgó el Premio Nacional de Cultura. Con ocasión de la Exposición: “The Spiritual in Art”,Made in the Museum of Contemporary Art, his work was declared National Heritage.
The works of popular or naïve artists represent a valuable cultural legacy. It is reflected in books and exhibition catalogs.
